“Film Genre” Fall 2021
Design course for over thirty undergraduate students, developing the syllabus and lesson plans, and drawing upon a diverse range of film clips from international cinema past and present, contemporary indie cinema, and early Hollywood movies. Incorporate short films from current filmmakers whose works appeared in my film festival (Vidlings & Tapeheads Film Festival). Utilize English and Mandarin language films with English subtitles to assist students who might struggle with fast spoken dialogue. Provide students with opportunities to share their reactions to the film clips and assigned feature films as homework. Include group projects and breakout sessions to encourage class discussion.

Over four years teaching experience at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, both graduate and undergraduate courses. TA for cinematography one semester, with the rest of the courses focusing on writing, editing, and film theory. Provide feedback on scripts with an eye toward clarifying story and transitions and streamlining dialog. Watch dailies and cuts of student films, giving storytelling notes with a focus on how editing can be used to clarify the filmmaker’s goals and strengthen the narrative. Explore film theory using curated movie clips and targeted examples from other student work in order to expand filmmaker vocabulary and deepen their understanding of narrative and documentary techniques. Further student knowledge of advanced editing tools in Avid as well as the principles behind why an edit is made. Coordinate and instruct students on edit workflow procedures, from screening dailies through picture lock. Export video mixdowns and OMFs for import into Pro Tools and QC layback to HD Cam.

Assist on nearly a dozen shows with a wide variety of duties and responsibilities including ingesting and transcoding media, grouping multi-cam, creating string outs, making outputs, QC, online prep, media management, LTO archival, and supplying deliverables for scripted and non-scripted television and streaming media. Our projects have been covered in Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and the other major trade publications. Primarily utilize Avid Media Composer, Media Encoder, and Pro Tools.
Atlanta Community Manager, KitSplit, Atlanta, GA, 2018
Represent the company for the entire Atlanta filmmaker community. Responsible for organizing and hosting monthly filmmaker networking events, promoting local independent filmmakers by facilitating screenings of their work and connecting crew in order to foster collaborations. Speak at local festival panels and host podcasts both as a filmmaker, festival organizer, and on behalf of the company. Report directly to the CEO and pitch additional ways to expand the company’s filmmaker network in the city.

Develop festival mission and build a crew from the ground up—personally select all coordinators, programmers, and jurors. Determine budget and work with sponsorship coordinator to raise funds, then manage all aspects of festival revenue and expenses. Strategize approach for in-kind prize donations from local and national companies and work alongside sponsorship coordinator in achieving potential partnerships. Curate festival program along with fellow programmers from over two-hundred film submissions. Spearhead press outreach, alternative publicity opportunities and social media campaigns. Create key art and logos for the festival website and submission platform. Design and layout festival print program and website. Initiate and maintain relationships with selected filmmakers, QC and organize all screening materials, and foster a festival alumni network.

Research and write grant proposals, press outreach, and festival submissions. Create and/or organize distribution deliverables including key art, stills, metadata, copyright registration, chain of title, sell sheet, EPK, CC QC, E&O Insurance, certifications, music clearances, and deal memos. Determine and manage film budget, LLC, and insurance filings. Conceptualize and execute the design of film’s poster, t-shirt, and zine as well as other design elements such as business cards, postcards, and letterhead. Lead two successful fundraising campaigns, creating the principal design elements and managing social media push across numerous platforms. Provide detailed editorial, story, and sound design notes on dozens of cuts of the film. Write and perform voiceover for the film. Organize special test screenings for audience reaction and feedback. Work publicity surrounding the film’s premiere, opening night of the Slamdance Film Festival where it was awarded the Jury Honorable Mention. Won awards and screened in nearly 30 film festivals worldwide before securing distribution. Available on premium cable outlet STARZ as well as iTunes, Amazon Prime, and numerous VOD platforms.
